As you may know, Google released the Wearable devices SDK two days ago.
It includes a system image (with two flavors), samples with a support library and some pages of documentation.
From an user point of view, the “Wow effect” is here. The UI is clear and well done. The fact that round devices are supported is just awesome and makes a difference with what already exists on the market. The combination of touch and voice inputs seems to do the work well.
Unfortunately, for now, I find it a bit disappointing from a developer’s viewpoint. The only (official) way to send content to the devices is to do it with notifications. Even if it covers the majority of the cases, it’s a bit frustrating not to be able to develop directly for the device itself.
However it seems that it won’t be a definitive limitation. The official presentation page says indeed that we will soon be able to Create custom card layouts and run activities directly on wearables. That’s in fact already possible by installing and launching your app directly on the emulator.
What is now missing is a way to launch apps directly with the device. Will it be possible with a minimal launcher or with voice commands? I hope we will know soon.
